DIY Bubbly Lava Lamps

My kids and I made these fun lava lamps back in 2011.  The last time we did this, we made the lava lamp in small water bottles.  I highly recommend doing it this way, because you can put the lid back on, save them and play with them again on another day.  On this particular day though, we decided it would be fun to make a larger lava lamp.  So we got out one of my long cylindrical vases that I purchased at Michael’s.

Supplies:

  • Vase or Water Bottle
  • Food Coloring
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Water
  • Alka Seltzer

Directions:

First we took a cup of water and added the girls favorite food coloring color….PINK!

Then we filled our vase about 3/4 full of vegetable oil.

Next we added our colored water to the vase. Be sure to leave about an inch of space left in your vase…otherwise the alka seltzer will make the oil overflow.

Break your alka seltzer into tiny pieces and drop them in one piece at a time.

Then watch your lava lamp come to life.

We also took our vase into a dark room and put a flashlight underneath.  Oh and if you are wondering why the color turned from pink to purple…it’s because the girls decided to add purple food coloring while our lava lamp while they were adding the alka seltzer.  They had fun watching the color mix in while it bubbled away.
