In my class, last Friday, we talked about why there would be no school on Monday because of the upcoming holiday Simchat Torah. We read a book about the holiday called, Sammy Spider’s First Simchat Torah by Slyvia A Rouss. We learned that Simchat Torah is when we celebrate the fact that throughout the past year we read the entire Torah scroll.
It just so happened that Facebook also reminded me of an activity my daughter did when she was going to our preschool (scroll down to the bottom of the post to see her pic). And since my students make challah every Friday, we decided to turn our challah’s into the Torah as well.
Ingredients:
-Challah dough
-Chocolate chips and/or Sprinkles
-Popsicle sticks
-Flour
First the children looked at a miniature version of the Torah.
The children then flattened out their challah dough.
They took a popsicle stick and rolled the challah dough around it on both sides.
Then they used chocolate chips and/or sprinkles to resemble the writing in the Torah.
